PaengNyong Island (PY-Do) is the largest of 3 islands held by the United Nations command. It is only 5-6 kilometers from the North Korean mainland. How far is it from South Korea? The same distance as it is from China.
I traveled the largest boat on many occasions. It took about 12 hours and in rough seas, departure is cancelled. That's not good if you are at the other end waiting to come home.
This is one of the rooms in the ship. There is a hallway down the middle where people left their shoes. The trick was to board fast, pick a spot on the mat, lay down and pretend to sleep. (If you were sleeping, people couldn't tell you to move and take "your" space.) After people settled, then you could move around more.
A new Norwegian-built boat, the Democracy, came into service in 1993. Still, if the seas were over 2 meters, it could not leave port.
This fishing bay has to be one of the prettiest spots in the whole world.
The rock formations, called TuMuGin, are spectacular. The island is off-limits to ordinary citizens without special permission to come here, so it is not crowded with tourist.
Yep. That's me posing for the camera.
Pebble Beach, California has nothing over this beach. Our gracious Korean hosts arranged the fishing to help us enjoy ourselves and perhaps forget we were many miles from family and South Korea.
Mrs. Kim at the Moon Wha hotel is a super-nice lady who took very good care of us. We were stranded on the island for an extra week one Thanksgiving. She arranged a special meal for us Americans and let us send her monies owed after we returned to Seoul.
The GgaChi Tabang (Teahouse) is across the street from the hotel. We've spent a lot of time in here drinking tea, playing cards, and trying to make time pass more quickly.
As I was washing my hands in the bathroom, I heard this awful noise and ran to the window. The soldiers were killing the second pig for the roast. I grabbed my camera and away I went!
Man, was that a good pig! During the summer, military family members are allowed to come to the island for a brief period to visit. Special festivities included this pig roast. They put a few large rocks inside the pig to help it cook more evenly.
