1994 All Star Game

Return to Tom's Home Page

Briefly...

It was an exciting pitchers duel, as the Early Division's hodge podge of hurlers managed to hang in with the dominant arms of the Late Division moundsmen until the Babe wore 'em out.

Late Stars Squeek in 11 as the "Other" Babe Stars

The Late Stars pounded away early, putting single runs across the plate in 4 of the first 5 innings; starters Dutch Leonard and Catfish Hunter seemed on the brink of disaster each time they stepped cross the white lines. In the top of the 4th, Johnny Antonelli replaces Bill Foster and proceeds to pipe one to Lou Gehrig for a 2 run blast. The game hums along at 4-2 until the 9th, when Al Holland is brought in to close it out. He chooses to open the door, letting the dangerous Joe Jackson and Tim Raines get on. His rattled nerves serve up a gopher ball to Willie Wells to put the Early-men in front 5-4. Smokey Joe Williams comes in and easily dispenses with the rest of the side. In the home frame starting RFer Babe Herman summarily plunks a ball over the right field fence to even the score. This is his second home run of the game. Joe Williams and Christy Mathewson bear down, each looking like they could go on forever until Babe Herman comes up and fulfills the Reggie-esque legacy: he hits a shot almost identical to his first two to give victory to the Late Stars in 11.
Joe Jackson, 3-5, all singles, 1 CS (by Chance - quite a surprise)
Willie Wells, 2-5, 1 HR, 3 RBI

Cool Papa Bell, 2-4, 1 SH, 1 SB
Babe Herman, 3-5, 3 HR, 3 RBI

Bill Foster, 2 2/3 perfect innings
Lee Smith, 1 perfect inning
Joe Williams, W, 3 IP, 1 H
