News Briefs: Rate Increase [after passage of I-695]
Renton Reporter, December 1, 1999

The Renton City Council passed an ordinance by a vote of 4-2 which gives the city the authority to increase utility rates in the Year 2001.

Victoria Runkle, the city's finance administrator, said the city needed the rate hikes in order to fund several capital improvement projects.

The ordinance, passed during the Nov 22, 1999, council meeting, would increase rates in monthly garbage, storm and sewer draining ,and water services.

The automatic increases will be tied to percentage increases in Seattle's July Consumer Price Index over that of its Index for the previous July--or 5 percent--whichever is greater. [Of course!]

Councilmen Randy Corman and Dan Clawson voted against the ordinance.

Councilman Bob Edwards and Councilwomen Toni Nelson and Kathy Koelker-Wheeler voted for the ordinance.

Councilman Tim Schlitzer was absent during the council meeting.
