Officials Dedicate New City Hall Entrance

Mayor Jesse Tanner and city council members dedicated the new entrance to Renton City Hall May 22, 2000, with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The ceremony included an official presentation of colors from Boy Scout Troop 464 and the presence of members of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

After the ceremony, guests enjoyed light refreshments and listened to music from the Renton Community Band.

Construction on the project began last September and was completed and opened to the public last month.

The access ramp wraps around the south side of City Hall and provides access to the jail-level parking from South Grady Way.

A staircase and passenger elevator, located on the west side of the City Hall, allows pedestrians and those who are disabled access to the plaza level from South Grady Way.

Additionally, 35 parking stalls were added to the lower plaza level, 66 trees were planted, an additional secure entrance was added to the police level, and suitable flag poles were installed to display the Unites States, Washington State, and Renton flags, and increased lighting was added to improve security.

Mosaic benches will be installed around the base of the staircase as part of the 1 percent for Art project.
Comment: Hopefully these mosaic benches will be a more appropriate use of funds than that money wasted on the black metal and blown glass greeting sign which was recently removed from Grady Way.

The project, which the city said cost less than $2 million, was designed by Calvin Jordon Associates and built by Gary Merlino Construction Company.
Comment: The cost was less than $2 million in this article; but in the mayor's Marvelous Asset speach, the cost was reported at $2.6 million. Oh, what the heck, what's a mill here or there.
