November 2000 Highlights

  • Approved the Stone Lane preliminary plat; 14 single family lots on 1.51 acres located on Queen Ave. NE.
  • Approved a contract with the City of Mercer Island for marine patrol services.
  • Approved a Hanging Flower Basket Program.
  • Approved an agreement with local governments within Water Resource Inventory Areas 8 & 9 for the funding and development of salmon conservation plans.

  • Approved the 2001 budget in the amount of $128,379,675.
  • Approved the 2001 solid waste rates.

October 2000 Highlights

  • Awarded the bid for the Liberty Park Skate Park/Highlands Annex Improvements.
  • Adopted a resolution urging the U.S. Congress to name the U.S. District Courthouse for the Western District of Washington after Congressional Medal of Honor recipient William K. Nakamura.
  • Awarded the bid for the Carco Theatre Seating Replacement.
  • Referred the subject of speeding Metro buses on N. 33rd St. to the Public Safety Committee.
  • Adopted a resolution declaring an emergency to suspend the statutory bidding process in order to contract for necessary work to conduct repairs of the Maplewood Wells water transmission lines.
  • Approved a 10-year license agreement with Teligent Communications to lease antenna space on the roof of Renton City Hall.
  • Approved the Laurel Lane final plat; 14 single family lots on 2.45 acres located in the vicinity of NE 10th St. and Graham Ave. NE.

September 2000 Highlights

  • Awarded bid for the East Valley Road Rehabilitation project.
  • Awarded bid for the Lake Washington Blvd./Burnett Ave. S. Storm System project.
  • Granted a franchise to Puget Sound Power for a period of fifteen years.
  • Awarded bids for the Grading & Drainage and the Synthetic Turf Installation projects at Maplewood Golf Course Driving Range.
  • Adopted trench restoration and street overlay requirements.
  • Approved budget request to provide funds for activities, events, and materials for Renton's Centennial Celebration in 2001.
  • Awarded bid for the North Renton Sewer Replacement project.
  • Approved an expansion to the Neighborhood Program to include additional support for neighborhood picnics and an aggressive outreach program.

August 2000 Highlights

  • Adopted the false alarms ordinance which sets limits for the number of false alarms and imposes penalties for excessive false alarms.
  • Approved the distribution of 2001 Community Development Block Grant funds to agencies recommended by the Human Services Advisory Committee.
  • Awarded bid for the Oakesdale Avenue SW Phase 1B & Phase 2 project.
  • Awarded bid for the Aberdeen Avenue NE Utility Improvement project.
  • Approved the 2000 amendments to the City's Comprehensive Plan.
  • Established a committee to address airport-related noise issues.
  • Declared a moratorium on the permitting of development and acceptance of development applications in the COR-2 Zone.
  • Authorized negotiations to develop a lease for a City parking lot to Stonefield Development Company for a new combination public/private parking structure.

July 2000 Highlights

  • Accepted $590,270 from the Transportation Improvement Board for construction of Oakesdale Ave. SW between SW 27th and 31st Streets.
  • Adopted a Resolution updating the City's Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program (2001 - 2006).
  • Awarded bid for the Rolling Hills Reservoir and Booster Pump Station.
  • Reported the official population for the City of Renton as of April 1, 2000 to be 48,270 as calculated by the State of Washington Office of Financial Management.
  • Transmitted a letter to the Metropolitan King County Council opposing a proposed King County Comprehensive Plan amendment which would increase residential densities from 4 to 48 dwelling units per acre.
  • Authorized Aberdeen Ave. NE Sanitary Sewer Special Assessment District.

June 2000 Highlights

  • Decided the appeal regarding the noise variance requested by the Washington State Department of Transportation for repaving of SR-167.
  • Approved, with conditions, the Buttar preliminary plat; 17 single family lots on 4.2 acres located in the 6000 block of NE 4th St. and Niles Ave. NE.
  • Concurred in the recommendation of the Park Board to name the newly dedicated downtown park the "Piazza" in keeping with the original idea of creating a central community gathering space.
  • Approved an agreement with King County to study transportation needs in the Valley area.
  • Decided that, should any court find that Renton's zoning scheme for card rooms is unconstitutional or illegal, then the City will permit existing card rooms to continue operating and otherwise ban card rooms in its jurisdiction.
  • Agreed to establish the Washington City and County Pipeline Safety Consortium in cooperation with other interested jurisdictions.
  • Accepted $432,973 from King County for basic life support services in 2000.
  • Amended the Sign Code to establish display periods for special event and grand opening signage.
  • Approved the Windwood final plat; 30 single family lots on 12.46 acres located in the vicinity of NE 5th St. and Quincey Ave. NE.
  • Designated $25,000 in the 2001 budget for the future construction of the Veteran's Memorial Park.

May 2000 Highlights

  • Approved the Honey Creek Heights final plat; 19 single family lots on 2.84 acres located in the vicinity of NE 25th St. and Ferndale Ave. NE.
  • Accepted the design for the Veterans Memorial Park, to be located at S. 3rd St. between Main and Mill Avenues.
  • Concurred in the recommendation of the Municipal Arts Commission that Mr. Hai Ying Wu be commissioned to create mosaic benches for the front walk of City Hall as a "1% for Arts" project.
  • Granted a ten-year franchise to Metromedia Fiber Network Services for high-capacity fiber optic communications lines.
  • Changed the procedure for notification of water shutoffs at multi-family facilities to ensure individual tenant notification as well as landlord notification.
  • Decided not to allow rolled curbs under the City of Renton's development standards.
  • Accepted the Windsong final plat; 41 single family lots on 11.55 acres in the vicinity of NE 4th St. and Hoquiam Ave. NE.
  • After a formal bid/proposal process, approved a contract with Waste Management Rainier to continue solid waste collection services.
  • Agreed to site Renton's new skatepark at Liberty Park, near the former Henry Moses pool.
  • Accepted an estimated $361,016 in Community Development Block Grant funds from King County for the year 2001.

April 2000 Highlights

  • Referred the subject of rolled vs. standard (angular) curbs to the Planning & Development Committee.
  • Approved an increase in the lease rate for City-owned T-hangars at Renton Municipal Airport.
  • Confirmed that the City will, at the time of termination for the initial Jobmaster and Cedar River Hangars leases at the airport, assume ownership of any buildings and other improvements made on these properties.
  • Agreed to take no action on the citizen request that the City prohibit parking of vehicles on front lawns.
  • Accepted the solid waste collection contract bid/proposal package, and authorized staff to advertise this bid.
  • Approved a budget adjustment ordinance to authorize additional appropriations for tenant improvements to the 200 Mill Ave. S. building.
  • Remanded to the Board of Public Works the matter of the request from the Washington State Department of Transportation for a noise variance to conduct resurfacing of SR-167 for a 16-night period.
  • Went on record as opposing a five-year extension of the current federal moratorium on Internet taxes.
  • Approved, with conditions, the Shorewood Preliminary Plat; 28 single family lots on 4.35 acres located in the 1900 block of NE 24th Street.
  • Recommended that City Code be revised to require that tenants of multifamily dwellings whose utility payments are in default receive a notice of impending water shutoff from the City a minimum of three days before actual termination.

March 2000 Highlights

  • Accepted a $605,000 grant from the FAA for the Municipal Airport's Seaplane Base rehabilitation project.
  • Accepted $200,000 from King County for construction of Oakesdale Ave. SW between SW 27th and 31st Streets.
  • Adopted an ordinance allowing A-frame signs.
  • Directed the Mayor to send a letter to the Tri-County Committee summarizing Renton's concerns regarding the Endangered Species Act's 4(d) rule.
  • Amended the lease with iCopyright, Inc. to expand into the first floor of the 200 Mill Ave. S. building.
  • Approved a lease with Iron Mountain, Inc. for the fourth floor of Renton City Hall for five years.
  • Approved the Talbot Ridge plat; 18 single family lots on 4.5 acres located in the vicinity of S. 47th St. and Smithers Ave. S.
  • Adopted the Critical Areas Ordinance (previously referred to as the Sensitive Areas Ordinance).
  • Concurred in the Centennial mission statement, goals and operating guidelines, and official City of Renton Centennial logo as submitted by the Centennial Advisory Committee.
  • Approved the Stafford Crest Division 2 final plat; 49 single family lots on 10.3 acres located in the vicinity of NE 36th St. and Lincoln Ave. NE.
  • Approved the 2000 Neighborhood Grant Program allocations.
  • Agreed to cooperate with four other cities to form a Valley Communications Center public development authority, which will construct a new Valley Com facility.

February 2000 Highlights

  • Welcomed newly appointed Councilman Dan Clawson back to the City Council to fill the vacant Council position previously held by Bob Edwards.
  • Joined the Administration in lobbying State and Federal officials to require that the Olympic Pipeline Co. conduct hydrostatic testing of its facilities in Washington to determine their safety.
  • Approved the Kirkland Court final plat; 19 single family lots on 3.96 acres located in the vicinity of NE 18th St. and Kirkland Place NE.
  • Concurred in the Greater Renton Chamber of Commerce's Renton Lodging Association promotion plan, which includes allocating $56,000 of hotel/motel tax money towards this effort.
  • Declined to modify the city's conditional use process as it relates to churches and other places of worship, as the process is aimed at mitigating any negative secondary effects and is not meant to limit freedom of religion.
  • Agreed to the demolition of the restaurant building at Renton Municipal Airport.
  • Authorized a franchise agreement for Level 3 Communications, LLC, to install cable in Renton for telecommunications services.
  • Adopted a resolution opposing the proposal to reroute air traffic from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport over Renton.
  • Approved a lease with Syntax, Inc. for the third floor of the former municipal building for five years.
  • Authorized a latecomer agreement for Centex Homes' Windwood subdivision.

January 2000 Highlights

  • Presented a gift of appreciation to outgoing councilman Bob Edwards in appreciation of his dedicated service to the City over the past ten years.
  • Accepted public testimony on the proposed Sensitive Areas Ordinance.
  • Authorized the purchase of approximately 1/2 acre along May Creek between I-405 and Jones Ave. NE for open space preservation.
  • Selected Dan Clawson for the vacant City Council position #2 (to replace Bob Edwards).
  • Approved the Morrison Annexation; 40.56 acres located north of SE 128th St. between the Windwood and White Fence Ranch subdivisions, including R-5 zoning for the area.
  • Approved the La Colina Final Plat; 138 single family homes on 45.37 acres in the vicinity of NE 3rd St. and Edmonds Ave. NE.
  • Accepted the Renton Lodging Industry's Promotion Plan, including a contract with the Renton Chamber of Commerce for its implementation.
  • Authorized the Administration to enter into an assignable option to purchase the Hilands Shopping Center as part of the Highlands Sub-Area Redevelopment Plan.
  • Approved the Briere Preliminary Plat; 18 single family homes on 3.6 acres in the 1900 block of Duvall Ave. NE.
  • Approved an agreement with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service for monitoring of Cedar River salmonid.
  • Adopted ordinances relating to adult retail uses (creating prohibited areas of location).
