Dreams & Nightmares

Spring 1998

Your goal is to create a visual presentation of dream you create for one of the two main characters in the novel Comfort Woman, Akiko and Rebecca. This is not a dream that exists in the book, but one create by one of the three theories.

Begin by thinking about the character's state of mind at the time in her life that you are creating the dream for. What is the purpose of a dream according to your theory? Then develop themes for what the dream may contain. Try to include several different situations or relationships from the character's life that represent the theme. Remember how dreams vary some information (sometimes wildly) while keeping core pieces in tact in some way.

You can create new memories that are not mentioned in the book but that fit in with cognitive and emotional themes shown in the text.

You can create a skit to act out or a visual collage, model or whatever creative, visual expression of the dream you would like. After the demonstration, be ready to respond to other students' attempt to analyze the dream.

Schedule:

You will be given time some time in class today, time after the exam tomorrow (at least an hour) and some time Wednesday. We expect the first groups to go at the end of Wednesday's class and the rest on Thursday. Prepare to be a Wednesday group.
