I've been making this drink for longer than I've been of drinking age. I dimly recall putting it together after reading a description of an old-fashioned in a science fiction short story, possibly one by Larry Niven or Jerry Pournelle, probably Inconstant Moon. It isn't an old-fashioned according to any cocktail recipe I've looked at. In fact, there's nothing exactly like this in any bartender's repertoire that I have been able to find. Watch it with this drink, tho. These are incredibly easy to drink, because there are no compensating bitters.
This is similar to a sling, which would ordinarily use plain water, and put the sugar in the glass rather than on the rim.
1 Shot of Whisky
A Few Ice Cubes
1/2 Lime or Lemon
Sugar
Club Soda or Sparkling Water
Pour a little sugar into a shallow bowl or onto a plate or saucer. Take 1/4 lime or lemon and run it along the edge of a lowball glass. Turn the glass upside down onto the sugar, to coat the rim. Put the ice cubes into the glass. Squeeze the rest of the lemon or lime into the glass. Pour the shot of whisky in. Pour in sparkling water. Shake gently to mix, or stir.
