Martinique is an island in the lesser Antilles and is a part of France. The language is French (boy is it!) and a local Creole. The temperature stays about 85-75 with a pleasant breeze. Below are some photos of the island and the people I met there.
This is Anse (cove) Mitan, the
beach nearest the hotel. On the northwest side of the island
is the city of St. Pierre. Destroyed by a volcano in 1902,
is offers some interesting
contrasts... There are new buildings next to
shells of the former town... There is still a market place
selling most everything, vegetables, house wares and really
fresh fish, hacked up right there on the stone wall, just
for you... On the Atlantic coast is the
village of Robert, my favorite town by
default On the southern end of the island
is this fabulous beach While in Martinique I met these
wonderful people at the hotel. The speaking of English draws
like fellows, here is Paige, Matt, me, Tracy (she spoke
French, our savior! and provided some of these photos) and
her mom Ella on New Year's eve 1999.
We had a mighty long dinner before
going to the beach to ring in the new year, There we met 2 Norwegian lads who
had been looking for a room at our hotel. We ended up at another restaurant
until the wee small hours, discussing all manner of things
and wondering why they didn't speak English here, the
Norwegians spoke better English than many Americans, claimed
they watched a lot of television.
