THE GUNNERY CHAIR

WE'RE BACK!

CWIN and SWAT may have appeared to be taking a long vacation, but both groups have been working on Car Wars projects, although at a slower pace than usual. I hope to publish the next CWIN around October 1st, assuming I receive more submissions from you.

Newcomer Christian "Wolfpawz" Fassel and RMADA's President Arthur Daniels have written this issue's Daemon Mechanic and GURPS DFT articles respectively. Christian has a presented a very interesting discussion about law enforcement in Autoduel America, while Arthur has demonstrated his expertise with GURPS Autoduel Second Edition by submitting several vehicle designs using those rules. You will see these designs in this issue and several following issues.

Tim Gould, Webmaster of the CADC, continues to perform a great job maintaining the SJ Games Car Wars Web pages. I am pleased Tim is concentrating on quality instead of quantity. If you have ideas for the Web site, please let Tim know.

I will be publishing the August 2049 CWIN to the SWAT Web site in a few weeks, with this issue following in a short period of time. Is this arrangement acceptible to you for future issues?

How do you like the new, streamlined, resume-like format of CWIN? Would you like to see more articles printed in the newsletter instead of only hyperlinks? My plan for this system was to print articles and news reports I mention on the SWAT Web site if they disappear from the Internet. I usually save these articles to my personal computer for archival purposes such as this one.

AUTODUELING IS NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT

SWAT enjoys running the WADA Car Wars League, but it is up to you, the participants, to submit event reports as timely and completely as possible. The WADA Web site has a very useful worksheet you can print and bring to duels and races. SWAT highly recommends you use this file to make sure your report to Philip White is complete.

Talking about Car Wars on the various message boards and reading/publishing this newsletter are fun activities, but the main reasons these resources exist is to support games of Car Wars. One of the best ways to establish gaming groups in your area is to use the gamer databases listed on the WADA Web site, especially Access Denied and The Autoduelist. Sign up and contact the combat drivers in your area!

See you in about 15 days. You will see some revisions to the SWAT Web site in early October, approximately the same time when I release CWIN 2.10. Your patience will be rewarded. Thanks for waiting.

KULT OF SPEED (KOS)

Hey Owen:

It's been a couple of weeks since I've been able to send you a letter telling you about this year's demolition derby attempt by the Kult of Speed. It was a blast this year in the fact that I finally got to race, hit a few people, and trash the car I ran, a 1986 Lincoln Continental Mark 7 Four-Door.

We got in a good seven or eight hits before the fuel pump let go (the engine was not getting gas). At least one of the hits was really good, halfway across the arena into a Cadillac. It was a solid hit because we heard the crowd go nuts with that hit.

I will tell you more about later events, but I thought I would drop you a line with how we did. We didn't make the feature event, but someone else used our car in the feature derby, and completed its destruction.

See you later.

MOVIES: THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH

James Bond is back: In the 19th installment of the most successful and longest-running franchise in cinema history, Pierce Brosnan reprises his role as James Bond, which he played so successfully in "GoldenEye" and "Tomorrow Never Dies".  In "The World Is Not Enough", 007 must
race to defuse an international power struggle with the world's oil supply hanging in the balance. The film also stars Sophie Marceau ("Braveheart") as Elektra King, the daughter of a murdered oil tycoon whom Bond is assigned to protect; Robert Carlyle ("The Full Monty") as the villain Renard, who has a bullet lodged in his brain rendering him unable to feel pain; and Denise Richards ("Wild Things") as nuclear weapons expert Dr. Christmas Jones. Dame Judi Dench, Desmond Llewelyn and Samantha Bond also reprise their roles as M, Q and Moneypenny, respectively.

DEATH RACING ASSOCIATION OF WASHINGTON STATE (DRAW)
http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Battlefield/6056

Fellow Duelists:

DRAW is back . . . sort of. July became too busy for most of the group as we joined the local chapter of the Society of Creative Anachronisms (SCA), a group of people who recreate the culture and heritage from the medieval ages. To see what Phil and I have been up to try going to <http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Omega/7064>. You can see pictures of us and our friends taking part in local events and "wars" in Canada and Oregon. The day we planned to have an outdoor Tonka scal game in Phil's backyard, we had an SCA workday that took until dark to convert his garage to an armor shop.  Instead of playing, we ate, watched a video from two wars we fought in and called it a day.

August saw a chance to play again and five of us gathered for a quick Division 10 duel using Matchbox scale cars.  Here is how it went.

DRAW ran a Division 10 Matchbox duel for August that ended with a "natural" disaster. Two tables had been set up with playing areas and a bridge placed to connect the two. The duel started slow with Frank "The Vulture" Bonnin cutting off Dave "Chip" Campbell with a line of spikes and took out Chip's tires as both headed for the bridge. Speed caused The Vulture to lose control of his car and forced him to bail out as his car spun out and off the bridge. He then took up the duel on foot and tried to shoot just about everybody. Bill "Blazen Bob" Stevenson took off at the start and tried the same thing with spikes as The Vulture, but Dave "Launchpad" Hill ran across the spikes and kept his tires. Phil
"Fritz" Bedard simply went around them and began to clog up the bridge further with his own spikes. Launchpad did well with the spikes, but he was going too fast to catch Blazen Bob, he spun out and sent his car over the edge of the arena. He bailed out and took up the game on foot
while trying to chase down his opponents. Blazen Bob turned and began to follow Fritz, losing all four tires, but maintained control and had
his car sliding at 60 mph straight up the bridge towards Fritz's car, The Vulture and an immobile vehicle with Chip inside. With everyone on
the bridge, except for Launchpad who was running to get on the bridge, an "earthquake" hit the arena causing the bridge to collapse and destroy the combatants and the remaining vehicle. Launchpad watched them plunge to their death and then began dancing a victory jig when realizing he won by default with a single point.

The next event is a Division 35 off-road event to be held on Saturday, September 18th at 5 p.m.

Don't forget, RadCon will be on the weekend of February 18, 2000 and we will be hosting the AADA U.S. Northwest Regional Dueling Championship again. Friday night is the Car Wars Lego game using vehicles made of Legos in the preliminary event. Saturday preliminary qualifiers will feature Hanford (3-D Midville again) and a 3-D edition of the Ozark Off-Road Autoduel Arena. On Sunday the final will be another model-destruction event with a tighter arena, jumps and more.

Until next time, support CWIN, duel often and help new people learn the game!

ROCKY MOUNTAIN AUTODUEL ASSOCIATION (RMADA)

Well, I put out the word for descriptions of the Bencon event, and nobody contributed. So, here is what I recall . . .

Participants: Bruce McClure, Ryan Williams, Mike Fal, Tom, and Arthur Samuels (your not-humble-at-all narrator). Our usual Sacrificial Lambs were eliminated early. I also remember driving right through a crossfire from four separate cars while avoiding dropped weapons (damned litterbugs), and coming out unscathed (everybody was shooting at someone else to retain sustained-fire boni, IIRC).

Ryan scored many points early, using a luxury armed with twin RRs and a turret RR smart-linked in. I also shot out someone's tires, and watched them skid and roll along one wall, giving me a much-needed kill point (up to that point I had been Switzerland, remaining mostly unscathed but not getting many points).

The final two came down to myself and Ryan. He had turned right toward me and had all weapons pointed at me. I also saw a ramplate (unbeknownst to me, it was a fake). I took out one of his tires, and he spun right into me, forcing a T-bone (my front to his side).  I did not have a ramplate, or it probably would've ended right there. Both survived, and the duel continued. I continued to fire into his damaged side, and killed his driver. He slammed into a pylon at 60 mph and survived, and I maneuvered around for another pass, intending to fire into his breached side. At that point, upon discovering that it took five seconds for the gunner to take control, he surrendered. I won the event, and Ryan took a very close second (the actual kill-points were a tie, but since his driver was dead, and he surrendered, the win went to me). Ryan took second place.

Samuels Slasher -- Mid-size, 150 ci gasoline ICE (with carburetor and turbocharger), active suspension, 4 SB solid tires, driver, 2 linked VMGs (each with HD ammo) front, HRSWC, airdam, spoiler. Metal/plastic armor: F, R, L and B, CA around ICE and driver, two AWHs front, two WGs back.

A tire-killer! Its ICE was just enough to make the car go, and its top speed was about 60 mph, all I needed for the tactics I had designed it for.

August 18, 2049: AADA World Racing Championship Results

The AADA and the CADC is very proud to congratulate MJ Daniels (Riverside, IL -- AADA 2049 WDC Referee) for winning the AADA 2049 World Racing Championship held at Origins '99 in Columbus, Ohio. He was followed very closely by Mark Pittman (Royal Oak, MI -- CADC) who placed second and Dana Madsen (Canada -- Independent Duelist) who finished third.

Congratulations to all 20 drivers who entered the event. The CADC enjoyed hosting the event and looks forward to being invited back again in the future to host many more AADA racing championships. For a quick summary of the WRC Finals, visit the CADC's Website. A special WRC edition of Tire Tracks (the Official Journal of the CADC) should be out by the end of July to cover all the details of the event.

August 22, 2049: New AADA Webmaster

The American Autoduel Association welcomes Tim Gould of the Championship Autodueling Circuit (CADC) as its new Webmaster. Most recently, Tim ran the AADA 2049 World Racing Championships at Origins '99 in July and has been running the CADC almost since its beginning back in 2036. Tim's primary duty will be the updating and maintaining the Car Wars Web site. He will be assisting Rob Deis (AADA Head Referee) and Elizabeth Lindsay (AADA League Manager) as they revamp the site for both style and content. The changes to the site can be expected to be gradual over the next couple of months to ensure quality and prevent information overload, but visitors to the site can look forward to two news updates a week, Wednesdays and Sundays to learn the latest happenings around the Car Wars World.

One of Tim's first projects is to get the ADQ Archive Project back online. You can help convert the ADQ collection to HTML format! Please drop Tim Gould a line if you are currently working a conversion or are interested in helping.

August 25, 2049: AADA Active Chapters Page

The American Autoduel Association Active Chapters page has been updated with the latest and greatest information. The AADA Active Charters page will be maintained with the up-to-date information to provide players a one-stop page to find AADA Charters in their area. Updates, changes and corrections to this page should be sent to the AADA Webmaster. Visit the AADA main page for more information about the AADA and forming your own AADA chapter.

September 01, 2049: CADC to host the AADA 2050 World Racing Championships

Start making plans to attend the American Autoduel Association's 2050 World Racing Championships which will be on July 13th-16th at Origins '00 in Columbus, Ohio. The CADC has accepted the challenge to host the event again with the promise to make it bigger and better than the 2049 event. Be sure to watch the AADA page for updates about the event. More detailed information will be coming in the next few months, but start planning your trip now. The Origins '00 site has not opened yet, but for more information about the con, check out the Origins '99 Web site <http://www.andonunlimited.com/CONS/ORIG99/>.

September 12, 2049: AADA 2049 World Dueling Championship Report

The finishing touches are being added to the American Audodueling Association's 2049 World Dueling Championship Report. MJ Daniels, this year's AADA World Racing Champion, was head referee for the event. MJ wrote a very entertaining report from the point of a TV Announcer at the duel. Plus it features many pictures right from the event,  including the new World Dueling Champion celebrating his victory standing outside of his dueling vehicle in winner's circle. The report will be available on Wednesday September 15, 2049. The report is worth the little extra wait.

September 05, 2049: NOVA Hosts Central Regional Championships at Concussion

On June 5, 2049, NOVA hosted the first Central Regional Dueling and Racing Championships held in Nebraska in many years. Attendance was primary made up of drivers from NOVA, but that did not stop the mayhem

Washington Park Arena was the site for the Dueling event where Mike Garrity picked up two kills to claim the top spot followed by Don Jacques in second and Norman McMullen in third. Garrity's two kills came from an 80-mph T-bone ram on McMullen and napalm mines setting Jacques' tires on fire.

Aerodrome Racetrack was the location for the Racing event and Garrity continued his winning ways to finish in front of McMullen in second and Jacques in third. Jacques posted the highest speed at 285 mph, but he pushed his power plant over the limit and blew up.

For more information about NOVA, be sure to visit their Web site. If you have Regional or Club Championships to report on, send the information to Tim Gould.

September 15, 1999: 2048-2049 AADA World Dueling Championship Report
http://www.sjgames.com/car-wars/aada/2049wdc/

The American Autodueling Association wishes to congratulate Michael Garrity on winning the 2048-2049 AADA World Dueling Championship. MJ Daniels, this year's AADA World Racing Champion, was head referee for the rounds held at Gen Con '99 over August 5th through the 8th. Congratulations are also offered to second place winner Darrin Marquez, third place winner Norman McMullen, Gold Cross Honorable Mention winner Glen Bucher and all others who entered the event.

Due to some technical difficulties, the photo of Michael celebrating his victory in the winner's circle that was mentioned in the previous news posting will not available. MJ did a great job of writing the report from the point of view of a TV announcer at the duel. Full play-by-play details of the final round of the 2049 WDC is now available.
