Greetings autoduelists! Welcome to another action-packed issue of CWIN. This issue has something for everyone. If you are planning to attend the AADA World Championship Events this September be sure to read the important news about those events here. Michael Garrity of NOVA has invaded the CWIN Offices again, discussing electromagnetic and personal weapons in addition to expanding his sensor systems article from CWIN 01.05. The First Autoduelist of Africa, Giuseppe Filotto, has written another installment to his exciting Taxi Driver story. All of the usual columns are here including yet another Arena Watch written by Michael Drennon.
There are no AADA Road Atlas and Survival Guide or NewsWatch articles this issue because I do not have any! I am working on a few timelines and I can write a RASG Entry for Spokane but I need help with these two columns. These two components of CWIN cannot be published if you do not write them! Composition of AADA RASG entries are a great way to advertise your home town.
Because of several requests from CWIN subscribers, I am pushing the deadline for the Vehicle Design Competitions forward again. If you want to submit any designs create them and send them to me before September 01. At that time I will add all of the submissions for the four current contests to the CWIN Archive.
Speaking of the VDCs, if the identity of the author of each design is kept confidential, should the rating of the designs be decided by a majority vote? If not, should there be a panel of judges, three duelists perhaps, to score the designs? Send CWIN your thoughts.
Before I let you read this newsletter I want to thank Nibbles & Bytes, a gaming store in Tacoma, Washington State. This store helped me acquire several issues of Pyramid (at only $1.00 each!) for a friend to complete his collection. This store is one of the best gaming stores in the Pacific Northwest, Nibbles & Bytes is a Games Workshop Chapter Store that also includes many out-of-print games and gaming magazines. Nibbles & Bytes has a large selection of computer games and has several tables for customers to play games.
If you are looking for something out of print or something new please give Nibbles and Bytes a call. If you are living near Tacoma, please host games you referee there.

Sumit Sarkar is a long time player without a home. He is now one of the charter members of RMADA. Brian Kelly is better known as Miles Messervy, a truly gifted, if somewhat insane, Car Wars player. You can read of his past WC performances in ADQ. He attended in 2040, 2042, 2043, and 2044. Eric Freeman also has no official home, but is an avid PBEM player. He lives in Southern California, I think, and plans to join us to compete this year. Other members include Phil Bedard of DRAW, Tim Jacques of NOVA, Norman McMullen of NOVA, Scott David Orr and myself. You and Garth Anderson, the reigning World Dueling Champion, have both been invited to join us.

TACTICON SCHEDULING
http://www.denvergamers.com/
The dates of the of the 2047-2048 World Championships' host convention, TactiCon, have been moved! According to the TactiCon Web Site, the convention will be held September 11-13, 1998. This time is a week earlier than the original dates (September 17-22, 1998) and is also a day shorter then the convention was originally scheduled. These date revisions will necessitate some changes in the event format, forthcoming as soon as they're finalized.

CHAMPIONSHIP AUTODUELING CIRCUIT (CADC)
Hi Michael. I've already set up a button on my Web Site menu bar to display the tracks we've used not only this year, but also in the past seasons. I haven't had time to activate it yet, but I plan to after the season ends in October. As soon as it is uploaded I'll send you a note.
How's things going on the West Coast? I really wish I could make it to the World Championships, as I would like to meet you in person, but this year has been pretty eventful and Denver a little out of my range.
We finally sent in our AADA Application in to SJ Games. I see that they added us to the AADA Web Site. I'll be receiving our official packet via physmail in the next week or so. We're official now. Take it easy.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN AUTODUELING ASSOCIATION (RMADA)
I am pleased to announce the most recent event in the re-birth of Car Wars. Dragonfire games of Boulder, Colorado has agreed to sponsor the charter of the newest official chapter of the American Autodueling Association. Please welcome the Rocky Mountain Autodueling Association (RMADA) to the Brotherhood. Meetings over the past two months have drawn an average of twelve players, most of them new to Car Wars and very enthusiastic. Dragonfire Games is anxiously awaiting the re-release of Deluxe Car Wars so they can sell rulebooks to the many new players.
The Rocky Mountain Autoduel Association is growing by leaps and bounds! We're pretty excited, and super-psyched for the World Championships at TactiCon (September 11-13)! The new Matchbox (TM) arena is under construction, and things are really coming together! This match promises to be a lot of fun. RMADA has three meetings planned for this month. All will be held in a learn-to-play (or brush up your skills!) format. If you want to learn Car Wars, or dust off those old rulebooks and go for the World Crown, now is the time.

ELEMENTAL FURY ARENA
PORT ANGELES, WASHINGTON STATE
http://www.serv.net/~owenmp/arenas/elemfury.html
Do you think you are tough enough, strong enough, foolish enough to battle the four ultimate enemies of autoduelists: The Four Elements of Air, Earth, Fire and Water? If you enter the Elemental Fury Arena in Port Angeles, near Hurricane Ridge in the Olympic National Forest, you will experience Nature's Wrath in all four forms. You will need to travel through four treacherous and deadly environments in order to be given permission by the Four Winds to battle your opponents. If you fail to conquer your fears and not challenge the Four Elements, you will be denied permission to fire on your enemies. You will be helpless, defeated and sacrificed to the Cleansing Flame.

OVERTURNED TRACTOR-TRAILER SPILLS ETHANOL, MOTORIST PANICS
Auburn Hills, Michigan
This was one trucker who couldn't hold his liquor.
Mike Blakley left Dayton, Ohio, early Friday with a load of Milwaukee's Best beer headed for a Michigan distributor. Nearing his destination, the tractor-trailer broke apart, spilling his load of more than 2,000 cases on State Highway 59.
"It was like a thump I heard, so I looked in my mirrors and beer was flying everywhere," Blakley told The Oakland Press of Pontiac.
Not all of the cases that fell burst open but many did, spewing beer along a 200-yard stretch of roadway and causing one suds-loving motorist to stop and cry in horror, "My God. My God. Oh no. My God."
Investigators found stress cracks in the frame of the wrecked semitrailer.

CLEAR ARMOR
The Army believes faceplates could offer soldiers as much protection as Kevlar helmets if they were made from a transparent aluminum compound.
As proof, they point to the faceplates developed by Jay Conners of the Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, Md. Made from aluminum oxynitride, they are 30% lighter and 40% thinner than the multiple-layer glass and polycarbonate faceplates currently in use.
Connors hopes to eventually perfect technology to make sheets big enough for windshields on Humvees.

GLASS STRONGER THAN METAL
Scientists, perhaps acting more like alchemists, have mixed up a new metallic glass alloy that could be the multipurpose material of the future. Until now, metallic glass has been too expensive.
Promising improvements in products ranging from electric transformers to golf club heads, metallic glass not only is stronger than normal metals, but also holds its shape better.
"Metallic glass is at least 10 times more elastic than metal," says Todd Hufnagel, a Johns Hopkins University researcher.
Metallic glass forms when molten metal cools without crystallizing. Like window glass, atoms rearrange themselves randomly. But metallic glass is neither transparent or brittle.
The alloy could also offer new military applications, such as armor-piercing bullets.

* SMART SHOOTER
A NEW RIFLE SHOOTS FARTHER, HITS HIDDEN TARGETS,
SEES AT NIGHT, AND ACCURATELY FIRES AROUND CORNERS
You can run but you can't hide. That's the message a new rifle being developed for U.S. soldiers will deliver to enemies in conflicts to come.
Scheduled for military use by 2005, the Objective Individual Combat Weapon (OICW) may be the most lethal gun ever developed. Accurate to 1,000 meters, it has twice the range of current infantry rifles.
The rifle will use two types of ammunition controlled by a single trigger: a standard 5.56mm NATO bullet (with 20- and 30-round magazine clips) and a new 20mm high-explosive (HE) air-bursting round (with 6-round magazine clips) that can be set to detonate at any range in front of, behind, or above targets hidden behind barricades or dug into trenches. The 20mm HE shell can also be set to explode on impact after a short delay -- a few second after breaking through a window, for example. This targeting information is relayed to the 20mm HE round in a fraction of a second.
The 20mm HE round increases the likelihood of hitting the target by about 500 percent, according to the gun's developer, Alliant TechSystems of Hopkins, Minnesota. Alliant heads a team that includes well-known German gun maker Heckler & Koch, KE Ammunition, and Controves Broadshears Systems.
The real key to the gun's effectiveness is a computerized firing system built into the sight. A laser rangefinder measures the distance to the target and communicates that data to a computer chip, built into the fuze of the 20mm HE round; that calculates the correct detonation time. The shooter can then further adjust the detonation time incrementally using buttons around the trigger guard. A 20mm round is about the largest an individual soldier can fire without recoil affecting accuracy.
The gun sight also has an infrared night vision mode and a video camera with a 6X zoom lens. Wired to a helmet-mounted video display, the camera allows a soldier to accurately fire around a corner without exposure to hostile return fire. Later versions of the gun will use a wireless link to a wristband to relay the target image.
The OICW also can be split into two separate weapons, adding a second trigger to control the 20mm HE portion (which is above the 5.56mm portion when the two individual weapons are combined).
Each gun will cost about $15,000. The U.S. Army envisions that two OICWs will become part of each eight-man squad, substituting for both the M-16 rifle and the M203 grenade launcher. At 14 pounds, the OICW will be lighter than the M-16, making it easy for soldiers to carry it into the field. Given the gun's effectiveness and versatility, you can expect every branch of the military services to have this weapon in its 21st century arsenal.

LEGIONARY PROTOTYPE BATTLESUIT
Legionary (TL8) -- This suit represents a first-generation attempt at battlesuit design. It is generally available at mid-TL8. It is considered to be in the testing stages at early TL8, and may be available (on an extremely rare prototype basis) as early as late TL7. In order to economize on internal space, the suit uses a rechargeable E-cell as its power source (instead of a bulky power plant). Offensive firepower is provided by whatever hand-held weapons the wearer of the suit wants to carry.
Sub-assemblies: 2 manipulator arms, 2 legs, limited-rotation turret.
Drivetrain: 1-KW leg drivetrain, in legs.
Arm Motors: ST50 arm motor in each arm.
Battlesuit System: Pilot weight: 200 lbs., has suit computer (complexity: 2), NBC kit (in body), limited lifesystem (in body; has 6-hour air supply), 1 day provisions (in body), quick access, trauma maintenance.
Built-in Weapons: None.
Sensors: 2-mile range PESA (in turret, facing forward).
Communication suite: Mini comm-suite (in turret).
Power Plant: None.
Energy Bank: Rechargeable power cell w/ 180,000 KWS. Powers all suit systems for 50 hours.
Volumes: Arms 0.5 cf each, Legs 1.1 cf each, Turret 0.75 cf, Body 3.6 cf.
Structure and Hit Points: X-hvy. frame (advanced materials), Arms 48 HP each, Legs 42 HP each, Turret 30 HP, Body 90 HP.
Surface Features: Basic stealth, Basic IR cloaking, Basic chameleon system, Radiation shielding, Sealed.
Armor: PD4; DR100 on turret and body, PD4; DR75 on arms, PD4; DR80 on legs. All armor is laminate.
Statistics: Loaded Weight: 1,057.85 lbs., Empty Weight: 857.85 lbs., Extra Weight Capacity (For carrying hand-held weapons or exterior cargo): 142.15 lbs., Loaded Mass: 0.6 tons, Mecha Volume: 7.55 cf, Size Modifier: 0, Arms -2, Legs -1, Turret -2, Price: $247,886. HT: 12.
ST and Reach: Body ST 45, Arm ST 50 (reach 1, Damage 5d+2 thr / 8d-1 sw).
Dimensions: 2.53 yards tall, 0.84 yards long and wide.
Ground Performance: Speed 10 mph, gMR 3, gSR 1, Move 5.
As you can see from this example, battlesuits really aren't cost-effective for general use in Car Wars. The Legionary is as stripped-down as possible (while still being an effective unit), but still costs nearly $250,000. However, the military just might be interested . . .

GURPS LITE
http://www.sjgames.com/gurps/lite/
GURPS Lite is a 32-page distillation of the basic GURPS rules. It covers the essentials of character creation, combat, success rolls, magic, adventuring, and game mastering.
The purpose of GURPS Lite is to help GMs bring new players into the game, without frightening them with the Basic Set, Compendiums, and a stack of worldbooks! With GURPS Lite, you can show your players just how simple the GURPS system really is.
It can also be used as a neophyte's stand-alone introduction to roleplaying . . . but it is really designed as a tool to let the experienced player bring his friends into the game.
It's available free, in PDF format, over the Web. You are welcome to copy and distribute it freely, within the restrictions found at the bottom of p.1 of GURPS Lite itself. It will also be included in some GURPS books, such as the upcoming GURPS Discworld.
You'll need the Adobe Acrobat Reader program to

When you look at older Car Wars products you will
notice Car Wars was a trademark of Texas Instruments until the mid-1980s.
Before Steve Jackson first published the Car Wars board game in 1981, the
TI corporation produced a computer game for their TI-99/4A personal computer
titled Car Wars. After TI quit production of their PC in the mid-1980s,
TI gave up their control of the Car Wars trademark, which SJ Games acquired
and has held to the present day. The GIF image located at the URL above
is a screenshot of the TI Car Wars game which can easily be converted into

We are looking for a few new members who love speed, firepower, the sound of a gas engine and the smell of HE in the morning. If you want to join a few of the proud and elite Kult of Speed, contact me.
If you think the power outage in Spokane caused by the supercell thunderstorm and tornado (July 10, 1998) was weird, in about a week the KOS President (yours truly) is going to unveiling the group to the world at the local county fair here in Illinois. I am going to be driving in a demolition derby on July 30 with a 1985 Plymouth Grand Fury Sedan. The KOS is trying to finish the car right now. I will let you know how we do in the derby. I am also going to have a T-shirt aimed at the team and a bit for the chapter too.
See you later. I hope that things are back to normal out there in Washington State.

July 31, 2048 Update: Hey Owen. We tried to race
at the demolition derby last night, but things did not work out that way.
We drove the car out to the fair and could not get it to run once we were
out there. About half an hour before the race, we called it quits and had
to flatbed the car home. I will send you some pictures of the car if you
want them. I gave up with it and I am going to let my brother run it at
a another derby somewhere else.
