Building a Guillemot
I had long wanted to build a boat of some kind. I looked at some stitch and glue kayaks
some coworkers built and was interested. I found Nick Schade's book on strip built
construction and I was hooked. I decided to build the Guillemot model from the book.
I didn't have a garage at the time, so I claimed an area at my place of employment to
build during my lunch hour.
Here's the forms. All the stuff in the background is the remnants of a pattern shop.
There used to be a foundry in the building next door. There's a 24" planer on the
other side of the shop from the kayak.
I'm making good progress on the stripping process in this photo. I'm using cedar, pine
and mahogany.
I skipped a few steps in the photos. Here's the long awaited launch. Most everything
in the building process went well. I discovered I don't really care for working with
fiberglass. Maybe the next boat will be a skin on frame...
