World Series Game 3, Oct. 15 Mays baffles Fremont with one-hitter, 4-0 win gives Seaview 2-1 series lead Mays fans 10, Gehrig knocks in three to lead Artisans Fremont, Wash. — Carl Mays, who got hit hard in an inning and two-thirds of relief in the series opener on Saturday, pitched a one-hit shutout in game three as Seaview beat Fremont 4-0 to take a 2-1 lead in the Century League World Series.
The only hit off Mays was Barry Larkin's two-out double in the bottom of the third. The scored remained 1-0 until the seventh. Tony Lazzeri led off the top of that inning with a ground single up the middle against Smoltz. Bucky Harris, playing his first game in a couple of weeks -- he'd been out with a back bruise suffered in a late-season game -- grounded out to third to advance Lazzeri to second. When Joe Sewell popped out to second it looked good with Mays coming up, but the pitcher blooped one into the gap in left-center for a double, plating Lazzeri to make it 2-0. Gehrig hit a two-run homer in the eighth to close out the scoring. Mays struck out 10 and walked four in his gem. He retired the last 11 batters he faced. |
