Rothenburg has been around since the middle ages, back when huge wars were being fought on religious grounds. (Thank God mankind has come so far since then!) It was constructed with a gigantic wall around it, so it would be easier to defend, and very difficult to attack.
Unless you have wings or a really long ladder, the only way inside the walls is this gate.
Once you're in, you notice that all the buildings have a similar character: old
Here's where we stayed, the Pension Elke. It's a cute place with a cute grocery store on the ground floor run by a cute little man and his cute little dad. We think old Elke is dead now. We saw her picture on the wall, but no other sign of her.
This is George, the Night Watchman of Rothenburg. I wish we could have gotten a better photo of him, but he only comes out at night; hence, the title.
If you ever visit Rothenburg, I strongly recommend this tour, which begins every evening at 8pm in the town square. It is both extremely informative and surprisingly entertaining.
You can actually walk along the inside of the top of the wall from which they used to fire cannons at, and dump pots of boiling oil on, their enemies. Now it makes for some nice viewing.
You've seen this building on tourism posters of Germany -- I know you have.
...inside the town cathedral. Beautiful plumage!
