Füssen is near to where Mad King Ludwig had his castles built. He picked some prime real estate, I must say.

We visited two of the four castles in the area. This first one is called Hohenschwangau. It is still privately owned (but not lived in) by descendants of royalty. They use the entrance fees for maintenance of the castle, the cost of which must be astonomical.

This castle, Neuschwanstein, is the more famous of the two we visited. It is the castle after which Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle was modeled, and is seen in virtually every tourism brochure of Germany.

This is the view of Alpsee (Lake of the Alps) from Neuschwanstein.
