I picked up a 5
spd transmission and swap package on Ebay in 2005 for $250.00, including
trans, driveshaft and drive yoke, and crossmember. The trans is the servo-synchro
type. Initial inspection was splitting the case and checking the bearings,
5th gear splines and general condition. The shift linkage was tight; everything
looked good. I didn't break down the mainshaft though. On installation,
I found it had serious gear clash in 2nd, and the shift in the 1-2 gate
felt funky. Other shift functions were ok. So, I had to pull the drive
package again (GRRRRRR).
It had a sheared
roll pin on the 1-2 shift fork, and the 2nd gear synchro clamping ring
felt looser than the others when sliding the shift collar over it. Evidence
of hard, abusive shifting. I found servo-synchro parts unavailable, or
way too expensive, so I swapped 1st and 2nd synchro parts, and dressed
the splines in the 1-2 shift collar. 2nd gear shifts are perfect now, and
the gear clash into 1st doesn't matter, since I don't shift into 1st until
stopped anyway. |
