Region
10..... A hot bed of hydroplane racing of all levels. From J-stock outboards
to the big boys of the unlimiteds. I have photographed all classes of
hydroplane racing but I concentrate on the inboard classes (I crew so
I'm there at most races anyway).
My
travels in region 10 have taken me as far south as Dexter Reservoir
outside of Eugene Oregon. AS far north as Harrison Hot Springs in British
Columbia Canada and as far east as Burley Idaho. But mostly I stay in
Washington hitting my favorite races such as Tastin n' Racin in Issaquah
and the world record courses of Black Lake in Olympia WA and my favorite
place to shoot, Lawrence Lake in Yelm WA (uhhhh, where's Yelm????).
I
have photographed races in Astoria Oregon as well as the major metropolis's
of Clarkston and Electric City Washington.
Region
10 is different when it comes to hydroplane racing. Most of the races
take place many miles away from the big cities, on small lakes and rivers
and in small towns that are grateful to have these spectacles coming
to there towns. The entire town comes out to support the races and the
racers appreciate the support they receive. Pateros, Silverdale, Orroville,
Poulsbo, Entiat, Spanaway, Yelm and Bonney Lake are some of the small
towns in Washington that have hosted races or continue to host the races.
We even race or have raced in the big cities of Renton, Spokane and
Issaquah. But the greatest place to race hasn't been touched by a hydroplane
in 19 years. Green Lake in the heart of Seattle. A lake that is perfect
for boat racing. It is small and it is flat and there isn't a bad spot
on shore to watch. In the 50's and 60's there would be 30,000 or more
people on the shore to watch the race.... A prelude to the big Seafair
race a week later.
