Calypso is a full-featured e-mail package from Micro Computer Systems, Inc, comparable to but more feature-rich than Eudora Pro. Although free for the first 30 days, Calypso costs $24.95 after the trial period ends. If the user chooses to continue using it without registering, the product downgrades to Calypso Lite, which only supports one mailbox and one e-mail address.

You can download Calypso at Tucows (http://www.tucows.com), as well as the company's Web site (http://www.mcsdallas.com). If you go to the MCS Web site by themselves, make sure to download Calypso E-mail Client and not Calypso Message Center (the latter is a distribution system for corporate networks).

If you have just recently installed Calypso and haven't used it yet, when you first open the program it will launch the Mailbox Wizard automatically. Otherwise, you will see the following screen:

If you're setting up this copy of Calypso for the first time, click on the Create a new mailbox icon.

Just click on Next. One feature of the registered (and evaluation) version of Calypso is that it can have multiple "mailboxes" which are kept completely separate from each other, and each such mailbox can be configured to check any number of e-mail accounts.

Type the name you want for the mailbox here. It can be anything, but we recommend naming it something like "Bob's E-mail", or something else that distinguishes it from other mailboxes on this computer. Calypso can also automatically place a shortcut to this mailbox on the desktop, which we recommend--using this shortcut will bypass the main Calypso screen. Then click Next.

Calypso has the option of setting a password on the mailbox, which will be required every time the user opens it. Many people think this is their Seanet password unless they read this screen carefully. We recommend leaving this password blank unless they're in a shared working environment and are concerned about coworkers or family members getting into their e-mail. Click Next.

If you wish, make Calypso the default mail program. If you're using Netscape, you will want to enable the tray monitor also, as this will integrate Calypso with Netscape. Otherwise, leave it disabled.

When you're done, there are a few defaults you may want to change in the Properties section.

We recommend removing the check from Compose with rich text (HTML)--unless, of course, you want to send HTML e-mail.

We recommend removing the check from Back up mailbox. The requests to back up the mailbox get annoying quickly, and can eat up disk space fast--and besides, you can always force it to do so at any time if you want to.

Click on Display Properties...

Place a check beside Use system folder (this will organize the folders of Calypso's main screen in a less confusing way), and place a check beside Disable HTML messaging.

Click OK on this screen, click OK on the next one, and then click Next to add an e-mail account.

Now it's time to add one or more e-mail addresses to the Calypso mailbox. Type a title for this e-mail address--usually the login name is a good thing to put here, but you can name it anything. In the next two fields, enter the user's real name and e-mail address, respectively. Click Next.

Select POP3. The username will default to the username portion of your address (as entered in the last screen).For the incoming mail server, put pop.seanet.com. Click Next.

Now put in the password for the Seanet account. You'll have to enter this twice, which is Calypso's way of guarding against typos. You should put a check beside Remember password. If the user would like a different reply-to address, you can enter it below. Click Next.

We recommend leaving this screen as the default, so that Calypso removes messages from the server after it's done retrieving them. However, you can change this as you see fit. Click Next.

Enter mx.seanet.com for the incoming mail server. The authentication method should be left as [None]. Click Next.

At this point, the configuration of this e-mail address is done. If the user has more than one e-mail address and would like to check all of them with this mailbox, you can click Add account to add another one.
