Internet Explorer 4: Internet Connection Wizard

This document will walk you through the setup of the Internet Connection Wizard that comes with older versions of Windows 98. The Connection Wizard will install and configure Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4.0 (IE4) for Web browsing and Outlook Express for mail and news services. Your exact Wizard may vary slightly from the one described here. All of the settings are the same, however. You may be prompted for your Windows 98 diskettes or CD ROM during the setup. Once you have done this, you will be ready to browse the Web using IE4 and also compose e-mail and news messages using Outlook Express.

Click on the Start button. Click on Settings. Click on Control Panel

Control Panel

  • Double Click on Internet Options.

Connections Tab

  • Click on the Connections tab.
  • Click on Setup button.

Step 1

  • Select I have an existing Internet account through my phone line or a local area network.
  • Click on the Next button.

Step 2

  • Choose Select this option if you are accessing the Internet using an Internet service provider.
  • Click on the Next button.

Choose Modem

  • You may be asked to select you modem. Select your modem and click on the Next button.

Connection Method

  • Select Connect using my phone line and click on the Next button.

Installing Files

  • You may be asked for your Window disks or CD to install additional connection software. When you are ready press the OK button.

Phone Number

  • Type in the full 10 digit Phone Number in the Phone Number field.
  • Uncheck the Dial using the area code and country code box.
  • Click on the Next button.

Username and Password

  • Type in your fully qualified username in the User name field.
  • Type your password in the Password field.
  • Click on the Next button.

Advanced Settings

  • Select Yes and click on the Next button.

Connection Type

  • Select PPP (Point to Point Protocol) and click on the Next Button.

Logon Procedure

  • Select I don't need to type anything when logging on and click on the Next button.

IP Address

  • Select My Internet service provider automatically assigns me one. and click on the Next button.

DNS Server Address

  • Select Always use the following
  • The DNS server is 199.181.164.1
  • The Alternate DNS server is 199.181.164.2
  • Click on the Next button.

Connection Name

  • Type Seanet and click on the Next button.

Internet E-Mail

  • If you want to setup Outlook Express as your default mail program click on Yes and click on the Next button.

Your Name

  • Type in Your name (Your actual name or a nickname). This name will appear next to your e-mail address when you send an e-mail.
  • Click on the Next button.

E-Mail Address

  • Type in your E-mail address in the E-Mail Address field.
  • Click on the Next Button.

Incoming Mail Server  (POP port 110) pop.seanet.com
Outgoing Mail Server  (SMTP port 25 or 587) mx.seanet.com

Server Names

  • Your incoming mail server is a POP3 server.
  • Reference the mail server table for the correct Incoming and Outgoing Mail Server names.
  • Click on the Next button.

Mail Logon

  • Select Log on using
  • Enter your POP login name (usually everything before the @ symbol) in the POP account name field.
  • Enter your password in the Password field.
  • Click on the Next button.

Friendly Name

  • Type in your e-mail address of Seanet Mail in the Internet Mail account name field.
  • Click on the Next Button.

Internet News

  • If you would like to set up Outlook Express to be your default news reader (most people choose to read the news on the web now) then select Yes and click on the Next button.

Your Name

  • Type in Your name (Your actual name or a nickname). This name will appear next to your e-mail address when you post to a newsgroup.
  • Click on the Next button.

E-mail Address

  • Type in your E-mail address in the E-Mail Address field.
  • Click on the Next button.

Step

  • Type in news.seanet.com in the News (NNTP) server field. This server does not require you to log on if you are connected directly to Seanet.
  • Click on the Next button.

Friendly Name

  • Type in Seanet News in the Internet news account name and click on the Next button.

Directory Service

  • Seanet does not provide a Directory Service. Select No and click on the Next button.

Complete Configuration

  • Click on the Finish button.
  • After you click Finish, the wizard may ask you to restart the computer. Once you have done this, you will be ready to browse the Web using IE4 and also compose e-mail and news messages using Outlook Express.
