Windows 98: Checking the Settings on an Existing Connection
Configuring Dial-Up Networking (DUN)

Click on the Start button. Click on Settings. Click on Control Panel

Control Panel

  • Double Click on Internet Options.

Connections Tab

  • Click on the Connections tab.
  • Click once on Seanet to highlight it.
  • Click on the Set Default button if Seanet isn't already your Default Connection.
  • Mark the Option Always dial my default connection.
  • Click on the Settings button.

Modem Configuration

  • Uncheck all the boxes on this screen.
  • Type your fully qualified username in the User name box.
  • Type your password in the Password box.
  • Leave the Domain field blank.
  • Click on the Advanced button.

Advanced Dial-Up

  • These options are user preference.
  • Click on the OK button when you are done.

Properties - General Tab

  • Click on the Properties button.
  • Type in the full 10 digit Phone Number in the Phone Number field.
  • Uncheck Use area code and Dialing Properties.
  • Click on the Configure button.

Modem Configuration - General

  • The modem should already be set to the correct Port number.
  • Speaker volume is user preference.
  • Maximum speed should be 57600 or lower.

Modem Connection

  • Click on the Connection Tab.
  • Data bits should be set to 8.
  • Parity should be set to None.
  • Stop bits should be set to 1.
  • Call preferences are user preference.
  • Click on Port Settings.

Port Settings

  • Check Use FIFO buffers.
  • The Receive Buffer should be on the second mark and the Transmit Buffer on the third.
  • Click on the OK button.

Advanced Modem Settings

  • Click on the Advanced button.
  • If you are using a hardware modem mark Hardware under Use flow control.
  • If you are using a software modem (the modem name will usually say "Soft" "Win" or "HSF" in it) then mark Software.
  • Extra settings can contain modem init strings to help connect better.
  • Log settings are user preference.
  • Click on the OK button.

Modem Options

  • Click on the Options tab.
  • Uncheck the first three options.
  • Check Display modem status.
  • Click on the OK button.

Server Types

  • Click on the Server Types Tab.
  • Select PPP.
  • Check Enable software compression and TCP/IP.
  • Uncheck all other options.
  • Click on the TCP/IP Settings button.

TCP/IP Settings

  • Select Server assigned IP address.
  • Select Specify name server addresses.
  • Primary DNS is 199.181.164.1
  • Secondary DNS is 199.181.164.2
  • Primary and Secondary WINS should be 0.0.0.0.
  • Both Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network should be checked.
  • Click on the OK button.

Scripting Tab

  • Click on the Scripting tab.
  • Leave File name blank
  • Check Start terminal screen minimized.

Multilink Tab

  • Click on the Multilink Tab.
  • Select Do not use additional devices.
  • Click on OK and keep clicking on OK until you can close the Control Panel.
  • YOU'RE DONE!
Although these settings should get you online there are also more advanced settings and configurations you can check if you are comfortable checking your network control panel and uninstalling and reinstalling software on your computer.
