Windows 98: Checking the Settings on an Existing Connection
Advanced settings

This document will walk you through some of the more advanced network settings that make Dial-Up Networking (DUN) work on Windows 98. You may be prompted for your Windows 98 diskettes or CD ROM during this process. If you are having problems connecting to the internet and you haven't checked the BASIC WINDOWS 98 DUN SETTINGS, we suggest you start there! If checking all the settings has failed you, try Removing and Reinstalling Dial-Up Networking.

Click on the Start button. Click on Control Panel

  • Double Click on Network

Configuration Tab

  • You should have Client for Microsoft Networks, Dial-Up Adapter, and TCP/IP listed under the Network Components window.
  • Click on the Dial-Up Adapter once so it is highlighted, then click on the Properties button.
  • If one or more of these are not listed see INSTALLING COMPONENTS

Removing and Reinstalling Dial-Up Networking

NOTE: You will need your Windows 98 disks/CD (or the Windows 98 cab files on your hard drive on some computers from certain manufacturers) to reinstall dial-up networking!

WARNING! Although this has been done many times on many of our customer computers, there is always the possibility that uninstalling and reinstalling of any software can cause problems or loss of data. Please make sure any important data on your computer is backed up before trying this.

  1. Go into Control Panels, Add/Remove Programs. Go to the Windows Setup tab and double click on Communications. Remove the check mark from the Dial-up Networking item.
  2. Close the Add/Remove Programs control panel.
  3. Click on Start, choose Shutdown, and select Restart.
  4. After the computer restarts, go back into Control Panels and Add/Remove Programs. Go to the Windows Setup tab and double click on Communications. Add a check mark next to Dial-up Networking.
  5. Restart the computer when prompted.
