OpenTransport/PPP for MacOS 7.5.5-8.6

Web www.seanet.com

There are 3 control panels used to configure OpenTransport/PPP. All three are located in the Control Panels folder in the Apple Menu.

OpenTransport/PPP requires that all of the OpenTransport Extensions are loaded and that the extension PPP and the control panels PPP (MacOS 7.5.5-8.1) or Remote Access (MacOS 8.5+ and iMac), Modem and TCP/IP are loaded.

You should contact Apple Computer if you do not have these installed and are not sure how to do so.

Beginning with the iMac and MacOS 8.5 Apple began using the Remote Access control panel instead of a PPP control panel. These control panels are almost identical.

The first control panel is PPP or Remote Access

PPP
  • Enter your Seanet username and password.
  • Select the access number for your location.
  • Click the Options button.
Connections Tab
We recommend not checking:
  • Prompt every 5 minutes to maintain connection.
  • Disconnect if idle for 10 minutes.
Protocol Tab
If the you has an iMac or System 8.5 there will be an extra pull down menu labeled Use Protocol, make sure it is set to PPP.
  • Check: Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications. (If it is the PPP control panel this option will be on the Connection tab.)
  • Check: Allow error correction and compression in modem.
  • Check: Use TCP header compression.
  • Do not check: Connect to a command-line host.

Click OK. Then close the PPP/Remote Access control panel. Select Save the changes when prompted.

The second control panel to configure is the Modem Control Panel

Modem
This pull down menu lets you select your modem from a list of scripts. These are the connection scripts that come with the modem.
  • Scripts can be added or removed by dragging and dropping them from the Modem Scripts folder which can be found on the following path:
    Hard Disk-->System Folder-->Extensions-->Modem Scripts
  • When modem manufacturers release new scripts they can usually be found at the manufacturers web site. Another way to search for modem scripts and firmware updates is to connect to www.versiontracker.com

Close the Modem control panel and save the changes when prompted.

The third control panel to configure is the TCP/IP

TCP/IP
  • Select: Connect via: PPP or FreePPP or ConfigPPP. This needs to be set to the PPP you're actually using!.
  • Select: Configure using PPP server.
  • Enter the Primary and Secondary DNS numbers in the Name Server Addrs box:

    199.181.164.1
    199.181.164.2
