The World's Biggest Chipper

I work for a little company called Acrowood. The company has roots in

the Sumner Iron Works in Everett, WA. The above image came from a

late 1940's sales newsletter. The 175" Chipper came to life in the 1940's and

the last unit was manufactured in 1956.

 

All of the big trees are too valuble chip now. None of the 175" chippers are

running today. I believe the largest chipper now running is a 153" in Tasmania.

 

I came across the 175" disc pictured above in Bellingham, WA in 2005. The paper mill

there is being razed and the disc is headed for the scrap bin.
